Introducing: AVERT HARM’s Youth Leadership Connection™

Lighting the Way: A Youth Beacon Initiative

Young people see what adults often miss. They notice the quiet friend who has stopped showing up, the classmate whose laughter feels a little forced, the teammate who’s suddenly withdrawn. Lighting the Way was created to honor that natural awareness and give it purpose.

This peer-led program invites youth to become beacons of positivity and early support—searchlights in their schools and neighborhoods who can spot risk factors, start conversations, and guide friends toward help. Through engaging workshops, open-circle meetings, and ongoing mentorship, participants learn to recognize signs of mental-health strain, suicidal thoughts, substance use, and other vulnerabilities.

Our approach is strength-based and compassionate. We focus on building resilience, celebrating positive choices, and equipping young leaders with practical tools to listen, respond, and connect peers to trusted adults and professional resources.

The result is a culture where no one has to struggle in silence, and where youth stand together as the first line of care—illuminating paths to safety, wellness, and hope.

The Youth Beacon Initiative

Peer-Led Awareness • Positive Action • Early Support

Program Vision

The Youth Beacon Initiative empowers young people to be guiding lights for one another. Like a searchlight on a dark horizon, participants learn to spot early warning signs of risk and to shine hope into their schools, neighborhoods, and online spaces.

Core Goals

  1. Positive Peer Leadership – Train youth to model healthy choices, empathy, and resilience.

  2. Early Identification – Equip them to recognize risk factors for suicide, mental/behavioral health concerns, substance use, and other vulnerabilities.

  3. Peer-to-Peer Engagement – Encourage regular “circle meetings” where participants share experiences, discuss challenges, and support one another in staying on a positive path.

  4. Health & Wellness Advocacy – Provide basic knowledge on mental health, stress management, and common adolescent health issues so peers can guide friends toward appropriate help.

  5. Community Connection – Link youth with trusted adults, clinicians, and local resources for timely referral and support.

How It Works

  • Training Workshops: Interactive sessions build skills in observation, compassionate listening, and safe intervention.

  • Searchlight Sessions: Small-group peer meetings where youth identify emerging concerns and brainstorm supportive responses.

  • Resource Network: A quick-access guide to mental health hotlines, counseling services, and crisis supports.

  • Leadership Pathways: Opportunities for advanced participants to mentor newer members and help lead community events.

Outcomes

  • Earlier detection of mental and behavioral health issues among peers.

  • Reduced stigma around seeking help.

  • Stronger youth-to-youth bonds that foster resilience and hope.

  • Increased collaboration between youth leaders, schools, families, and local health services.
