A.V.E.R.T. Harm Safeguard Training Specialty Training

Safeguards are proactive protections to reduce harm and strengthen resilience. They can be applied to emotional, mental, physical, social, and systemic domains.


1. Emotional Safeguards

  • Stress management and self-care routines.

  • Peer and community support networks.

  • Access to counseling or emotional first aid.

  • Mindfulness, grounding, and coping skills training.

  • Safe spaces for expressing feelings and processing trauma.


2. Mental / Cognitive Safeguards

  • Screening and monitoring for mental health risks.

  • Cognitive load management and burnout prevention.

  • Decision-making support tools (structured assessment like S.C.A.N.).

  • Education on recognizing early signs of cognitive overload, confusion, or distress.

  • Crisis preparedness and de-escalation training.


3. Physical Safeguards

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) in clinical or community settings.

  • Injury prevention strategies in workplace and daily life.

  • Environmental safety checks (housing, neighborhoods, public spaces).

  • Health maintenance: sleep, nutrition, exercise, chronic disease monitoring.

  • Emergency response training (first aid, CPR, basic harm mitigation).


4. Social / Relational Safeguards

  • Peer support, mentoring, and buddy systems.

  • Healthy boundaries in interpersonal and professional interactions.

  • Community networks for shared resources and protection.

  • Anti-bullying, anti-harassment, and conflict resolution strategies.

  • Advocacy for equity and access within social systems.


5. Systemic / Organizational Safeguards

  • Training in ethical practices, confidentiality, and reporting.

  • Coordination between clinical, social, and public health systems.

  • Regular audits and quality improvement to detect hidden or cumulative harms.

  • Leadership oversight and accountability frameworks.

  • Safe use of telehealth, social platforms, and community apps.

  • Monitoring for misinformation, exploitation, or algorithmic bias.

  • Education on responsible digital engagement for clients and peers.
